About Douglas Stuart

Douglas Stuart (born May 31, 1976) is a Scottish-American novelist and former fashion designer best known for his Booker Prize-winning debut, Shuggie Bain. Born and raised in Glasgow, Stuart later studied at the Scottish College of Textiles and the Royal College of Art before moving to New York City, where he spent years working in fashion. Shuggie Bain (2020), inspired in part by his working-class Glasgow childhood and his mother’s struggles with alcoholism, won the 2020 Booker Prize; he followed it with Young Mungo (2022) and John of John (2026). His fiction frequently explores class, poverty, masculinity, sexuality, family relationships, and queer identity within Scottish communities.
