Larry McMurtry (1936–2021) was a Pulitzer Prize-winning American novelist, essayist, screenwriter, and bookseller celebrated for his unsentimental portrayals of Texas and the American West. Born and raised near Archer City, Texas, he drew heavily on the changing culture of ranching and small-town life in novels including Horseman, Pass By, The Last Picture Show, Terms of Endearment, and his Pulitzer Prize-winning epic Lonesome Dove. McMurtry also enjoyed a distinguished screenwriting career, winning an Academy Award with Diana Ossana for their adaptation of Brokeback Mountain. A lifelong book collector and dealer, he eventually transformed his hometown into a destination for used and rare books through his enormous Booked Up bookstore.
