Asako Yuzuki (born August 2, 1981) is an acclaimed Japanese novelist best known internationally for Butter and Hooked: A Novel of Obsession. Born and raised in Setagaya, Tokyo, she studied French literature at Rikkyo University before beginning her literary career, eventually earning major recognition including the Yamamoto Shūgorō Prize for Nile Perch Girls’ Association, later translated as Hooked. Her darkly perceptive fiction often examines women’s relationships, loneliness, social expectations, obsession, food, and contemporary Japanese culture. Butter became her international breakthrough, winning Waterstones Book of the Year in 2024 and helping introduce her work to a much wider English-language readership.
